Missing Adam - The Journey

Adam and Crystal were married right after graduating high school. They were barely 19 years old when Andrew was born. They struggled as most young couples do but they were in love and they were happy. Andrew was their pride and joy. They were together in Louisville and had left about an hour before I did. My son Michael, and my daughter Kari, were with me as we started the drive home to Cincinnati. About 30 minutes into the drive home, my cell phone rang. It was Adam checking to see if I was on the road yet. He warned me to be careful. He told me the mile markers where there was ice or snow and which lane to stay out of. During the 2 hour trip home, he called me 5 times just to make sure we were ok and not having any problems. Looking back now, I can see the irony in that day. He was so scared his mom would slide on the icy roads and have an accident. I made it home safe without any problems. A few hours after getting home Adam called. He asked if I would babysit for a few hours. He and Crystal wanted to see a movie. Lemony Snickets had just come out in the theaters. My head was saying no because I was so tired that night. But as was always the case, I could not say no to Adam. I told him I'd love to babysit. Adam and Crystal dropped Andrew off at my house about an hour later. It was a cold night and Adam wasn't wearing his coat. It didn't matter that he was 21 years old. I was still his mom so I told him he needed to put his coat on. He gave me "the look" that he always did when I told him this and we both laughed. It was a joke between us. Sometimes if I hadn't reminded him to put on his jacket he would pause at the door and wait for me to say it just so he could give me "the look." It was our joke. Adam hugged me before he left. His hugs were the best. He always hugged like he meant it. It was never a quick automatic reflex hug. It was always an "I love you so much" kind of hug. He said "Thanks Mom, I love you." Those were the last words I ever heard him speak.
